Promise and Peril: America at the Dawn of a Global Age

Christopher McKnight Nichols

Spreading democracy abroad or protecting business at home: this book offers a new look at the history of the contest between isolationism and internationalism that is as current as the wars in Syria and Afghanistan and as old as America itself, with profiles of the people, policies, and events that shaped the debate.

Christopher McKnight Nichols teaches history at Oregon State University (OSU), is Director of the Oregon State University Center for the Humanities, and founded OSU’s Citizenship and Crisis Initiative. Nichols specializes in the history of the United States and its relationship to the rest of the world, particularly in the areas of isolationism, internationalism, and globalization. He is the author, co-author, or editor of six books, including Promise and Peril: America at the Dawn of a Global Age. A past OSU Professor of the Year, Nichols was recently named 2021 Sandy and Elva Sanders Eminent Professor in the OSU Honors College. Nichols is also on the board of the Oregon Historical Society.
