Oregon Ballet Theatre

Taking inspiration from the exhibit, Wild About Dance: Oregon Ballet Theatre Celebrates 30 Years, children (and parents!) are invited to join Oregon Ballet Theatre Teaching Artist Robyn Ulibarri for a flurry of holiday dancing to the music of George Balanchine’s The Nutcracker. Children will get to try some ballet steps, recreate poses seen in the photos on display, and learn about dance costumes, especially tutus and pointe shoes.

Ballet Papalotl

Established in 2003 by Dr. Kenya Marquez, Ballet Papalotl shares the authentic culture and folkloric dance of Mexico with the people of Oregon and the Pacific Northwest to contribute to a more peaceful and harmonious multicultural society. Through learning Mexican folkloric dance, Ballet Papalotl dancers remember the history of the Mexican people and the values and traditions of these ancestors, as human beings. Since 2005, Ballet Papalotl has won first, second, and third place in the Junior Festival Awards at the Portland Rose Parade for best costume and dance troupe, second place at the Starlight Parade, and was Dance Wire Ambassador 2019.

Murray School of Irish Dance

The Murray Irish Dancers have performed traditional and modern Irish dancing for over 23 years throughout Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and California. Hard shoe and soft shoe dances are accompanied by toe tapping, rousing Irish music played live by their director, Geraldine Murray. They will have you clapping along and ready to dance! The Murray Irish Dancers are in high demand around St. Patrick’s Day and have performed with world renowned artists such as the Chieftains and Eileen Ivers, (the fiddler from Riverdance). They have also performed for the former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson. Murray Dancers are highly accomplished competitors placing fifth in the Irish Dancing World Championships and winning several Western U.S. Regional Championship titles.

Yingwana Baba Khosa

Yingwana Khosa was born into the Tsonga ethnolinguistic group in South Africa when the apartheid laws were in full swing. As a young man, his neighbors included Nelson and Winnie Mandela. Yingwana came to the United Sates over 30 years ago as a member of a Zulu performing group that was employed by Barnum & Bailey Circus. Today, Yingwana shares the sounds of Africa through Ngoma, “the drum.”
