COVID-19 Update

For the 2021–2022 school year, the Oregon Historical Society and National History Day® office are committed to offering safe state and national contests; therefore, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, both contests will take place virtually.

Registration Dates

Registration will be open from Monday, April 4 at 8am to Monday, April 18 at 9pm.

Educator Registration Guide

All educators and coaches must register on the Oregon State History Day Contest Website by Monday, April 18, at 9pm. IMPORTANT: Your student(s) can only register AFTER their teacher/coach has registered.

Student Registration Guide

All students must register and submit their projects virtually on the Oregon State History Day Contest Website by Monday, April 18, at 9pm. Unlike in previous years, students can register first WITHOUT needing to upload their projects when they register. They can upload or update their project any time before the registration deadline at 9:00 pm on Monday, April 18. We encourage students to register for the contest as soon as possible.

Category Submission Instructions

All entries must comply with the general and category-specific rules explained in the NHD Contest Rule Book (PDF) as well as the Category Submission Instructions below. Students must read the Category Submission Instructions PRIOR to submitting their project.

Date and Location

Projects must be submitted for the virtual Oregon History Day state contest during the open registration period of April 4 to April 18, 2022. All categories must be registered and uploaded by 9pm on April 18. All students who develop an Oregon History Day project may enter the state contest.

Fees and Waiver Requests

$25 per student

$5 per teacher

ALL students must pay the registration fee. Your registration is not considered complete until payment for any associated fees has been received Fees are being processed through Greater Giving, which can be accessed through the Oregon State History Day Contest Website. Please contact the Oregon History Day Coordinator at history.day@ohs.org for fee waivers, as needed.

Judge Feedback and National Contest Selection

At the 2022 state contest, a team of three judges will remotely evaluate and rank students’ projects using the new evaluation forms and new Contest Rule Book. The judges will provide scored and written feedback to students. There will be NO judge interviews.

Students who place first and second in each category and meet all contest rules and criteria will be eligible to participate in the national contest. In the event that the first and/or second place entry declines to participate in the national contest, the third place entry will be invited, assuming they meet all of the requirements.

State contest websites will be locked.

Registration closes and all projects must be uploaded and submitted (changes cannot be made to students’ projects once they are submitted).

Fees for all categories are due from students and teachers ahead of the registration deadline.

Fees: $25 per student and $5 per teacher.

Friday, April 22 – Tuesday, April 26 (5 days)

Judges evaluate and rank students’ projects. There will be no student interviews with the judges.

Wednesday, May 4 at 8am PT

Websites unlock; students can incorporate judges’ feedback ahead of the national contest.

Friday, May 6

OHS emails results to students and teachers and posts them on the Oregon History Day web page: ohs.org/oregonhistoryday.

Eligible students are invited to the national contest.

Week of Monday, May 9 – Friday, May 13

OHS sends state contest certificates of participation to all and medals to first, second, and third place finishers.

National History Day® virtual contest registration opens; all projects must be uploaded and submitted per the national contest category instructions (these may differ from the state contest instructions).

Dates and Location

Registration Opens: Wednesday, April 13, 2022, at 9pm PT

Registration Closes: Tuesday, May 17, 2022, at 8:59pm PT

Due to COVID-19, the national contest will be held in a virtual format.

At the national contest, a team of three judges will evaluate and score students’ projects and provide scored and written feedback. Students who place first, second, and third will receive medals. Students may apply for a variety of special awards and for tuition scholarships through some universities.

Students must pay a fee per student registration to participate in the national contest. Some scholarship support may be available through a student’s school, community, and/or the Oregon Historical Society. Please contact history.day@ohs.org for assistance.

The national contest provides students with an opportunity to compare their work with their peers’ work, to revise and present their project to another team of judges, and to participate in contest activities including the Welcome Ceremony and Awards Ceremony.
