   Sean McEnroe is an Upper School history teacher at the Oregon Episcopal School in Portland, Oregon. He received his M.A. in history from Portland State University in 2001. His article is based on his master’s thesis.

   Cain Allen is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Geography at the University of British Columbia. He has a master’s degree in history from Portland State University and is currently working as a researcher in the Oregon Historical Society’s Education Department.

   Jennifer Ott holds a master’s degree in history from the University of Montana. She has worked in museum education in Amana, Iowa, and Seattle, Washington, and has contributed to historylink.org, an online encyclopedia of Seattle, King County, and Washington state history. She is currently exploring creating historical markers documenting Washington’s environmental history prior to Euro-American settlement.
