August 14 - January 5, 2009
While the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum is temporarily closed and seeking a new site, the organization plans to mount special exhibits at select locations to showcase its substantial collection of sports memorabilia, artifacts and photography for viewing audiences around the state. The Oregon Historical Society has generously provided exhibit space for one of the first shows outside the now closed Hall of Fame Museum.
The exhibit will feature a limited but significant snapshot of the individuals and teams who exemplify the mission of the Oregon Sports Hall of Fame & Museum: to recognize and appreciate Oregon’s rich athletic history. Our goal is for this legacy to inspire participation in sport and foster awareness of the values and life-long rewards gained from this participation.
Exhibits and athletes featured will include:
- Basketball: Mel Counts and Danny Ainge
University of Oregon Tall Firs 1939 NCAA basketball champions - Baseball: Johnny Pesky, Bobby Doerr, Dale Murphy
- Oregon Women: Margaret Dobson, Thelma Payne, Joni Huntley, Mary Ayotte-Law
- Olympics: Don Schollander, Dick Fosbury, Della Sehorn
- Special Contributors: Multnomah Athletic Club, Nike, Pendleton Roundup
- Masters Athletes: Mac MacTarnahan, Lavelle Stoinoff 1977 NBA Champion Portland Trailblazers
- Heisman Trophy: Terry Baker
- The Umpires: Original sculpture of a Norman Rockwell illustration for 1943 Saturday Evening Post
The exhibit opens to the public August 14, and will run until January 5, 2009, during regular museum hours.
