Indians Fishing at Celilo, Columbia River, 1899. Benjamin Gifford photographer, Gi 156 & 45452. Indians constructed fishing platforms alongside the falls and used long dipnets to catch salmon ascending the Columbia River. Until the first half of the 20th century Indians sometimes used boats, or swam to cross the swift currents to reach remote fishing stations located on the islands near Celilo Falls. |
