Wallulapum-Palouse
Maker of cradleboards and cedar coil baskets, storyteller

"I know just from being. When I was young, I watched and watched the old people."

Agnes Goudy Lopez spent much of her youth in the company of her great-grandmother, Ála. Together, they traveled the traditional Indian trading route along the Columbia River all the way north into Canada. Ála made baskets along the way to supplement fish she had to trade. Through these long summer journeys, Lopez learned to weave baskets, prepare traditional foods, and tell stories.

Today, Lopez shares this information with family members and others who express an interest. She lives in Troutdale, Oregon with her son, Leon, and spends time with her eight children and extended family members.

"My great-grandmother, Ála, was full of legends and stories of a long time ago when the animals used to talk. I spent many summers with her."
