![]() Teresa Danovich grew up in the Byzantine Catholic Ruthenian religious tradition. Her grandparents were from Slovakia in Eastern Europe and she has been studying icon painting since 1993. She specializes in a folk icon style that paints images of popular religious figures on glass using bright colors, simple motifs and exaggerated perspective. These pieces are displayed in the home and might be used traditionally as part of weddings, baptisms, and other special events.
Area: Statewide Folk Icon Glass Painting Students will learn about the tradition of icon painting, the role of icon painting and other artistic traditions in Eastern European life, and its history as a forerunner of Western European art. Students will follow a traditional method for painting an icon of their choice. First they will select their image, trace the image onto glass, outline it in ink, select their colors, and begin to fill in the outline without smudging their work as they go. As a final step, time permitting, they will apply imitation gold leaf to select areas of their work, and place their glass in a frame. Special needs: oil paints, fine-tipped brushes, and frames with removable glass. Folk Icon Glass Painting for Art Teachers This all day workshop will be an in-depth version of the above residency, with more emphasis on the history of the tradition. Teachers will receive a packet of materials, including examples of patterns to use in their own classrooms.
