Roberto González came with his family to Portland in early 2000. Born and raised in Havana, Cuba, Roberto spent much of his time visiting relatives, absorbing the traditional Cuban music that flourished at gatherings and regional festivals. His first guitar lessons came from his cousin and brother who taught him Cuba’s most popular and traditional song, “Guantanamera.” Roberto went on to receive formal training from an older music teacher who taught him traditional Cuban music. Later he studied at El Conservatorio Ignacio Cervantes.
Area: Statewide Cuban Music Roberto performs a rich blend of music, including traditional Cuban styles such as son, charangas tipicas, huarachas and rumbas, as well as more contemporary Cuban music like “Feeling” and Nueva Trova. In addition, he plays American popular and Brazilian music.
