Lani Hawkins was taught the Hawaiian way of life as a child, including how to prepare herbs for healing sickness, weaving floor mats using pandanus leaves, weaving hula skirts out of ti leaves, and sewing. At age 12, her interest in hula deepened. In 1981, she became involved with a Hula Halau and received her certificate to teach. She has been teaching children traditional Hawaiian dance ever since. Lani works in conjunction with weaver and musician Sam Kama.
History of Hula Students will learn the basics of traditional Hawaiian hula dance, including the meaning and names for each movement. Time will be allowed for them to make their own leis and possibly their own hula skirts out of ti leaves. Hawaiian Lei Making Students will make their own leis from ti leaves and tropical Hawaiian flowers while learning about Hawaiian traditions and culture.
