![]() Jean Ye is a seventh generation artist in her family. She first learned painting from her father and grandfather. Later, Jean earned a B.A. in fine arts and painting and has taught traditional Chinese painting, paper cutting, clay figurines, and children’s art in China and the U.S. Since moving to Portland in the mid 1990s, she participates in many community-based art and cultural activities in Oregon.
Area: Portland Area Chinese Brush Painting Students will learn about the history and evolution of Chinese painting as well as different styles and symbols. They learn the proper way to hold a brush, to mix ink, and to produce dark and light shades of black to create a bamboo branch and other simple designs. Using sample designs as guides, students create original work using black ink and water color paints. Supplies: about $3 per student Traditional Chinese Arts Jean offers classes in paper cutting, calligraphy, clay figurines, Chinese New Year customs, and decorations. A residency can be customized to focus on one or several of these art forms. Paper cutting is a folk art done to decorate windows for the New Year. It can be very simple, using folded paper and scissors, or complex, using fine-tipped knives, tissue paper and water colors. Folk sclupture is another Chinese traditional art in which clay is shaped into symbolic designs such as animals of the zodiac. Jean will explain the cultural significance of each art form, introducing students to Chinese customs and traditions.
