![]() Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim learned the intricate designs of traditional Palestinian embroidery from her mother and grandmother. Many of the designs tell stories about historic events and figures, such as Cleopatra; others teach children about the world around them. Feryal has lived in the Portland since 1990. She was a certified teacher in Jordan where for 12 years she taught elementary, middle, and high school. Area: Portland area only Type: Residencies, Workshops Grades: All Cost: Workshop or residency fee schedule Palestinian Embroidery Students learn about the rich tradition of Palestinian embroidery and the stories told through geometrical designs. They will design their own patterns that tell a story or have personal meanings. This will be done first on graph paper with colored pencils then transfered from paper to a plastic canvas. Younger students will use special “needle-free” yarn instead of metal needles. Middle Eastern Mosaic A hands-on workshop in Arabic mosaic will allow students to use paper rather than ceramic tiles to create original designs for placement on bookmarks, picture frames, or other creations.
