Elicia was born in Las Cruces, Michoacán, Mexico. As a young girl in Mexico she learned traditional arts—embroidery, cross stitch, paper flowers and piñatas—in classes at school as well as from family members. Her aunt and mother taught her to make piñatas, and she and her friends used to spend evenings together practicing embroidery. Elicia came to Oregon in 1991 and now lives in Prinville. She enjoys working with children of all ages and has passed the knowledge of these traditional arts to her children and grandchildren so they remain connected to their heritage.

Area: Within two hours of Prinville
Type: Workshop, Residency
Grade: K-12

Paper Flowers
Paper flowers are common in many Mexican fiestas as decorations. Elicia makes crepe and tissue paper flowers with students as well as explaining their cultural importance in Mexico.

Piñatas (residency or workshop)
Students make individual mini piñatas shaped around a small balloon. They can then create stars, boats, or other shapes from their piñatas.
