The Chehalem Parks & Recreation quilters are a Newberg quilting group with 25 members, ranging from 40 to 90 years old whose experience with quilting varies from beginner to expert. They have been meeting each week since 1987 at the Newberg Community Center to work on individual projects. They have done numerous school presentations in Yamhill County and several members are retired school teachers.
Quilting in the 20th Century Members from the Chehalem P & R Quilters explain the process of quilting and its role in women's homes and lives throughout history, particularly in the Northwest and bring materials to demonstrate a wide variety of quilting styles and techniques. Students have the opportunity to make their own quilt block. They learn to arrange designs and colors in order to get the desired effect. Teachers have the option of putting together (either sewing or pinning) a class quilt. Before Women Could Vote This half-hour presentation uses quilts to trace women's political involvement from colonial history to the 1920s when women received the right to vote. Quilter Betty Smith shows quilt blocks or pictures of quilts by women in history who expressed their beliefs about women’s rights through their quilts. Quilting Demonstration The Chehalem P & R Quilters can set up a quilt frame in the school so individual classes can watch and ask questions. This is an informal way for students to learn about the quilting process and see expert quilters in action.
