Antonio Centurion
 

Antonio Centurion is Guarani, a people of mixed indigenous and Spanish origins who are the majority in Paraguay. His father gave him his first harp, the national instrument of Paraguay, at age 12. Antonio performs solo as well as with a five-member group: Grupo Kultura. He taught elementary school for five years in Paraguay before moving to Oregon in 1991 where he has continued to work with young people.

Paraguayan Harp: Workshop
Antonio introduces Paraguayan music and its various cultural influences. Students learn specifically about the importance of the harp in Paraguayan culture, its history and evolution over the years.
 
Harp Music of Paraguay—Galopas et Guaranias con Arpa Paraguaya

Antonio demonstrates galopas and guaranias, two rhythmic styles most common in Paraguayan music. The country’s music is a blend of Spanish and indigenous styles and also reflects influences from neighboring Argentina and Brazil. Students learn about the cultural importance of songs in Paraguay as part of everyday life from celebrations to soccer games to politics.
